De Novo is a documentary theatrical piece, a true story, crafted from immigration court transcripts, interviews, and letters that recount the harrowing story of Edgar Chocoy. As a 14-year-old, he fled gang violence in Guatemala and traveled over 3,000 miles, through three countries, to the United States in search of his mother.


De Novo depicts the plight of “unaccompanied alien minors” held in immigration custody in the U.S. and the fight for justice and asylum.

SUNDAY CONCERT SERIES is happening at TRAVERS PARK at 5 pm and you can visit the green market and frolic on the open 78th Street Play Street as part of the JH Green Alliance initiative along with Council Member Daniel Dromm and State Senator Jose Peralta and Queens Council on the Arts who have contributed resources to extend the open street in 2011!

LIFE is a Cabaret my friend ! - Open Call STARRING YOU!


Inkfish, www.inkfishart.com, is launching a new company and will host a cabaret at Club Atlantis as part of June in Jackson Heights on Thursday, June 23rd, at 10 PM. We are looking for 10 - 15 performers, solos, and groups interested in presenting short pieces (no longer than 7 minutes). Pieces should be low tech. We will have a small light weight table covered in black, limited lighting capability, a full sound system, and a very short tech at the venue if needed. The stage is a raised platform, 8' deep x 12'wide, with a 6 1/2 foot ceiling height.


Performers will receive:

* 2 comp tickets per group
* a copy of their performance on DVD
* a cut of the door

Each performer and performing group must be willing to sign a release form allowing us and them free use of the video of their performance and image for promotion and marketing. All creative and artistic rights are the artists.

If you are interested in being considered please send any materials or a description of your piece to Alissa Mello at inkfishart@gmail.com. I look forward to playing and working with you in June.

This is event is being presented by Club Atlantis with the support of June in Jackson Heights and New York City Council Member Daniel Dromm.

JH artist and teacher, CARLA LOBMIER, has graced the windows of ULTIMA FLORALS with her spring contribution...another vibrant and rich painting from her series of works. She has been showcasing a new work each season, providing additional beauty to the window arrangements and plants that George and the crew at Ultima put together.

We recently met artist NORMA GREENWOOD who has been in Jackson Heights many years perfecting her passion for painting. Back in January, I wrote about an amazing painter I met in our neighborhood: Laura Schiavina.

Laura M. Schiavina has lived in Jackson Heights since 1951. Included in the Who’s Who of American Art, her award winning work has been collected and exhibited nationally and internationally, including exhibitions at the Islip Art Museum, NY; Sumner Museum, Washington D.C.; DuPont Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Citicorp Gallery, LIC; Eleftherias Park Art Center, Athens, Greece; National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts, NY; New York City College of Technology, CUNY; and Ringel Gallery at Purdue University, IN. One of the first female members of the Salmagundi Club, Laura was chosen by Cynthia Maris Dantzic for her book “100 New York Painters,” published in 2006.

Laura is member of N.A.W.A, National League of American Pen Women, National Art League, Jackson Heights Art Club, Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts, and Audubon Artists. Laura came to New York in 1944 from Springfield, MA to become a fashion illustrator, completing evening courses at the Traphagen School of Fashion, while working in business. Deciding to continue in business, she studied fine art weekends, evenings and vacations from the late 1950's through 1980 with artists including Will Barnet, Carl Molno, Joseph Caine and Paul Puzinas.
