GARDEN SCHOOL PARK UPDATE: Despite lightning, thunder, sleet and snow, upwards of 150 people went to a meeting in Jackson Heights last night to support an 11th hour effort to turn an athletic field at the Garden School into an extension of Travers Park. The meeting followed a vote last week by the Board of Directors of the financially troubled Garden School to sell the field to a developer for construction of an apartment building. The next step appears to be a renewed effort to seek loans from community members and land trust organizations in the hope of helping the Garden School get past its immediate financial crisis until the signing of a contract for purchase of the land by the city. The city has set aside $5 million for that purpose. Attending the meeting were Garden School officials, Councilman Daniel Dromm, Assemblyman Michael DenDekker and commuity advocates.
